All Things PerfectDisk and Defrag

As alluded to in a previous post, PerfectDisk's patented SMARTPlacement optimization strategy is about to get a whole lot smarter. Users will be able to let PerfectDisk do its thing as always, but if they prefer, they can make their own settings, their own custom strategy. Files, applications and directory data can be automatically placed on the drive according to each users' unique requirements or preferences. Flexibility and customization, not tyranny, to better maximize drive and file performance, and better speed up PC performance.

As beta tester Allen Flores stated, "I love the ability to specify the placement order and additional space between categories - terrific feature addition!" The way smartplacement works can improve performance if the program you are running was installed 40 days ago because after that the modified date is more than 40 days and the file will be change to "Occasional" zone. With the last access date you can always put the file in the 'recently" zone

According to what is in this blog post, SmartPlacement does not sort files by how often they are accessed, just the modification time stamp, which is great to minimize future fragmentation, but not for performance. Having the Prefetch files list at the beginning of the drive is great though. The best strategy imo would be to monitor which files are accessed and how often (not just looking at the last access timestamp) via an updating database, which keeps track of which programs are opened how often, and maybe at what time of day and all the associated files that normally load when the program loads up to it's initial screen. Also keeping a list of the files that are needed by a program linearly. Also, which individual files are accessed how often. Just my 2 cents.

And, you can configure PD to place ALL layout files (includes boot and non boot prefetch files) at the beginning of the drive. We also are continuing to look at the overall strategies employed and continue to expand the capabilities of the PerfectDisk engine. Thanks, Joe
